Culver town officials, county representatives, Housing Developer Kevin Berger, and other dignitaries helped break ground on the Sand Hill Farm workforce housing development in Culver Wednesday afternoon.
The housing development includes 24 apartments that will feature affordable one, two and three bedroom units at 540 W. Jefferson Street with hopes of the project complete in 2018. Elkay, one of Culver’s largest employers, will provide the cabinetry for the units in an extensive project partnership.
Developer Kevin Berger with Easterday Construction is investing the land and overseeing the project while the Town of Culver and the Culver Redevelopment Commission is investing $800,000. A Regional Cities grant worth $270,000 will aid in funding the development. Stellar Communities funds, along with $100,000 from the town’s General Fund and a loan from Lake City Bank will complete the rest of the needed funds.
Town Council President Ginny Bess Munroe addressed the many members in attendance for Wednesday’s event. Marshall County Commission President Kevin Overmyer mentioned that good things are happening in Marshall County with the Culver project and the start of the construction of a manufacturing center in Argos on newly purchased land to form an industrial park.
Following the ground breaking ceremony, the town hosted a Stellarbration event that recognized the town’s effort in becoming a Stellar Community. Those involved in the Stellar Committee were on hand to answer any questions about the projects forthcoming in the Stellar plan.
