Culver Council Revisits Downtown Sidewalk Snow Removal

The Culver Town Council is looking to the Chamber of Commerce to help organize snow removal on downtown sidewalks.

The issue was brought up Tuesday by council member Tammy Shaffer. She noted that the town’s snow plows end up dumping snow on downtown sidewalks, with business owners having no place to put it. Culver Town Manager Jonathan Leist said the town could remove the snow from Main Street and place it elsewhere, but it would likely be a day later when it finally gets removed.

It was noted that in the past, local businesses have teamed up to hire an individual to clean the sidewalks, who was able to coordinate with the town’s plowing schedule. Council member Sally Ricciardi supported the idea of bringing back that arrangement.

However, the question remains of who would organize that service on behalf of the businesses. Some have requested that the town do it, but Ricciardi and Council President Ginny Bess Munroe were concerned with the cost. “When we’re getting a bid, it becomes $10,000 instead of $200 per snow because it’s the government requesting the bid,” Munroe said. It would be nice to be able to request a bid not from us.”

Munroe suggested that the Chamber of Commerce consider organizing snow removal on the downtown sidewalks.
