The Caring Cupboards initiative, which got its start locally in Marshall County has spread across the area and even reached over county lines.

Organizer Rebecca Palmer provided an update to the Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety when they met for their final meeting in November.

Information to Keep In Mind As You Prepare for Saturday’s Snow Fall

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Saturday in many Northern Indiana counties, including Marshall, Pulaski, and Starke.

In Pulaski County, the Advisory goes into effect at 5 a.m. EST on Saturday while in Starke and Marshall Counties, it is anticipated to go into effect at 8 a.m. EST. The Winter Weather Advisory in all three counties will remain in effect until midnight.

Kankakee River Basin Commission Votes to Fund Preliminary Repair Costs

When Kankakee River Basin Commission members met Thursday morning, they permitted a total of $254,000 to be paid to three counties in order to assist with immediate repair needs resulting from the recent flooding.

Senior Petroleum Analyst Expects High Gas Prices to Continue in 2018

For the last 10 weeks, the United States has consecutively seen a steady decline in crude oil inventories, according to Gasbuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Dan McTeague.

In January of 2017, the cost of a barrel of oil was around $52. McTeague shared that right now, we’re seeing prices closer to $66. That is a $14 difference and he said it may increase as the year goes on with high demand at the national and international levels, increased exports and stalled production continuing to impact costs. Charges Filed After Investigation Into Infant Suffering Frostbite

Charges have been filed, and more information is being released after an early February incident that left an infant suffering alone in the cold.

The Starke County Sheriff’s Office was called to the area of 250 W. and 500 S. in Starke County on February 5th. According to the Sheriff’s Department, the call notified authorities of a vehicle accident.

Prescription Drop-offs Continue Hazard Prevention Efforts

The Starke County Sheriff’s Department says their prescription drug drop-off program continues to bode well.

A box sits in the lobby of the Starke County Jail that’s intended to act as a receptacle for the prescriptions. Drop-off programs are designed to protect water supplies, prevent taking expired medication, and reduce the spread of medications used as an illegal narcotic.

Nepotism Law May Affect Local Officeholders

A state law passed fairly recently may start having implications for elected officials in Starke County.

House Enrolled Act 1005 states that an individual may not hold elected office if they are working, or volunteering, for a fire department providing services to that unit of government. The language may have consequences for several individuals about to serve in county, city, and township government.
