The Marshall County Jail is still holding about 200 inmates, but efforts are being made to reduce that number.
The Marshall County Commissioners will consider a speed limit and stop sign ordinance on Veterans Parkway and Linden Road. They will also discuss the 2018 road plan for Underwood Road in Union Township and 12th Road in Bourbon Township.
The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department and the Marshall County Committee for a Drug-Free Indiana encourage residents to drop off prescription medication that is no longer needed.

The Marshall County Council will meet today where Commissioner Kurt Garner will discuss a rate increase in the Cumulative Bridge Fund.
The proposed increase is for $.0524 cents per $100 assessed valuation. The average taxpayer would see an increase of $26.20. County officials are anticipating a deficit in that fund in 2019 which causes concern about funds to rebuild bridges for public safety. A public hearing on the matter is set for Monday, March 19 at 10:30 a.m.
The Marshall County Council members considered an additional appropriation for a fingerprinting machine for the probation department.
The Marshall County Commissioners will meet this morning. They will receive information from the Shady Rest Committee concerning the committee’s favorable recommendation of an addiction recovery program to be conducted in the Shady Rest Home facility on Lincoln Highway in Plymouth.

Argos Clerk-Treasurer Lisa Mullaney will discuss an intergovernmental agreement for planning services. Clerk Deb Vandemark, acting on behalf of the Marshall County Election Board, will present a contract with Microvote and Brian Kubicki will have an annual agreement with Gibson Insurance for approval. Treasurer Angie Birchmeier will have a tax billing contract proposal from Worrell Corp. and Planning Director Ralph Booker will present a right-of-way dedication for approval for Carl Stockberger.

Sheriff Matt Hassel presented the request to the Marshall County Commissioners in December who supported the effort. He presented the same information to the county council Monday morning.
The Marshall County Council members will reorganize when they meet for the first time this year today.

Offenders who do not go through the booking process at the Marshall County Jail may soon be fingerprinted in the office of the probation department.
Sheriff Matt Hassel brought the recommendation before the Marshall County Commissioners Monday morning. He said he has been talking with the court about installing a new iTouch Biometrics fingerprinting machine in the probation office.
The Plymouth Police Department and Marshall County Sheriff’s Department received donations for their K9 programs with combined efforts from the American Legion Post #27 in Plymouth.
On Tuesday, Members of the American Legion, Ladies Auxiliary and Sons of the Legion presented checks to the Plymouth Police K9 program and the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department K9 program. Each check was for $3,000. Continue reading
The Marshall County Council will meet this morning with a full agenda. The council members will discuss all of the line items in the 2018 budget in a hearing after their regular business meeting.
James Bend and James Pheibush will have a funding request for care of inmate patients while Sheriff Matt Hassel and Annette Osborn from WIC will request a waiver for a 90-day probationary pay. EMA Director Clyde Avery will present an additional request for a mitigation plan update with the EMA Performance Grant and the personnel committee members will discuss updates to several positions. The Marshall County Council considered an additional appropriation request in the amount of $50,000 to take care of LED lighting upgrade and other repairs at the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department.
According to Gary Masterson from the county maintenance department, all of the lighting has been updated outside of the jail in the parking lot, and more lights are being switched out inside the facility as soon as one goes bad. Additional money is requested in case more issues arise at the jail.
Marshall County Attorney Jim Clevenger presented the commissioners this week with a ticket format for fines and fine amounts for ordinance violations.
Sheriff Matt Hassel and Clerk Deb Vandemark asked that the commissioners set more definitive fines for ordinance offenses such as curfew violation, junk vehicles, open burning, and animals running at large.
The Marshall County Commissioners discussed generator needs at the highway department.
Maintenance Director Doug Masterson along with Gary Masterson approached the commissioners with a quote from M & J Services and Michiana Contracting, Inc. to provide a generator for the highway department. The highway department does not have a generator to help with department needs when there is a loss of power. The commissioners discussed the need previously and Doug Masterson presented the quotes for approval Monday morning. Continue reading
The Marshall County Commissioners will soon approve a set fee for all violations in the violations bureau.
County Attorney Jim Clevenger said the problem is a number of the ordinances including abandoned vehicles, animals running at large and curfew, to name a few, don’t have specific monetary amounts given for frequent violations of the same ordinances. The officers don’t have a way of knowing if it’s a first, second or third violation.
Marshall County Sheriff Hassel told the Marshall County Commissioners this week that K9 handler, Brandon Cooper, has accepted a position on the Plymouth Fire Department and will no longer be a K9 officer. Sheriff Hassel said a decision had to made about the future of the K9 at the sheriff’s department.
“In doing some research on K9 Arras, it will be nine this year leaving a limited time left on its service lift,” said Sheriff Hassel. “The K9 was purchased through funds from the Culver Lake Maxinkuckee Lake Association and I asked them what they would like to see. I gave them options – let the officer purchase the dog, let the dog go with the officer or go ahead and train somebody to work with the dog over the next two years. Their recommendation was to go ahead and let the dog go with the officer.”
A new officer at the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department will be attending the Law Enforcement Academy but his attendance had to be approved by the Marshall County Commissioners.
Sheriff Matt Hassel asked the commissioners to waive the age requirement to attend the academy as listed in the job description in the county employee handbook. Colin Smith is only 20 years old and the handbook requires a candidate to be at least 21 years of age. Smith will be turning 21 later this month. The academy takes trainees at the age of 18.
