The Marshall County Community Foundation announced grant winners for the first round of 2018 grants from the Community Fund and the Ralph C. Vonnegut, Jr. Fund on Wednesday afternoon.

Jeanette Rarick Memorial Scholarship Open To Bremen Students Seeking Various Post-Secondary Options

Bremen students are being encouraged to apply for the Jeanette Rarick Memorial Scholarship before the deadline of Friday, April 13th.

According to Marshall County Community Foundation representatives, Jeannette Rarick spent about three decades working with Bremen students and will be remembered most for tutoring math. After she passed away from cancer last May, her husband, Max Rarick, worked to create this scholarship fund to honor her teaching legacy. Continue reading

Plymouth BOW, City Council to Meet Tonight

The Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety members plan on opening bids for surface treatment spring projects and street and sidewalk projects when they meet tonight. The board members will also consider a conditional offer of employment for a paramedic position and a request to release partial retainage funds for Kokosing Industrial for work done on the wastewater treatment facility.

The board will meet at 6 p.m. tonight followed by the Plymouth City Council meeting.

Marshall County Community Foundation Now Accepting First Round of Grant Applications

The Marshall County Community Foundation is now accepting grant applications for this year. If you’re seeking assistance from the organization you’ll need to act fast, as the first round of applications are due February 1st.

The grants provided support specific projects or programs throughout Marshall County, typically focusing on human services, recreation, the environment, health, education and the arts. Continue reading

Culver Town Council Approves Grant Fund Appropriations

The Culver Town Council members discussed grant funds that were appropriated during the year at their meeting this week.

Clerk-Treasurer Karen Heim commented that the town was fortunate to receive several grants in 2017 that weren’t recognized in the budget. She recommended that the list be available to inform the public of all funds awarded and spent, and on the record for the Department of Local Government Finance.

Bremen High School Senior Named Recipient of MCCF 2018 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship

Bremen High School Senior Emma Hundt has been named the Marshall County Community Foundation 2018 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar.

As the recipient of the 2018 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship, she will receive a four-year, full tuition scholarship to the Indiana college of her choice, as well as a $900 annual stipend for required equipment and books. After graduation, Hundt plans to pursue a major in Engineering at Purdue University.  Continue reading

Double Donations to Marshall Promise Program on Giving Tuesday

Marshall County Promise will take part in this year’s Giving Tuesday event through the Marshall County Community Foundation.

Marshall County Promise is a program that helps youth in the county’s school systems dream about future careers and save for education beyond high school. Donations will be used to help local youth open CollegeChoice 539 accounts with an initial $25 deposit.

Culver Community Schools Benefit from the Season of Giving

Culver Community School Board members approved multiple donations when they met earlier this week.

A large donation that was up for board approval was from a local family who provided $10,000 to the band program this year and promised to donate $5,000 annually for the next three years.

Superintendent Karen Shuman stated that much of the donation money from this year will be used to purchase instruments and band chairs but some funds could potentially go toward redesigning the band room as well. Continue reading

Bowen Family Medical Scholarship Wants to Help Fix Physician Shortage in Rural Indiana

There are almost 7,000 communities around the country with an inadequate number of primary-care providers, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. A 2016 study by the Association of American Medical Colleges found that in the next decade, the country could be short 95,000 doctors.

The lack of primary-care providers can affect urban and suburban areas to a degree but it is the rural communities, like those in Marshall County, that tend to be hit the hardest. The Bowen Family Medical Scholarship was established to combat the issue and focuses on meeting the health needs of rural communities by supporting primary-care medical students as they work their way through medical school and residency programs. New Project Elements Revealed During Plymouth Redevelopment Commission Meeting

The Plymouth Redevelopment Commission provided a financial and structural overview of the Aquatic Center Project that will be built adjacent to the LifePlex when they met earlier this week. City Attorney Sean Surrisi explained that while 2.2 million dollars of grant money received through the Regional Cities Initiative will be used for the Aquatic Center, new funds have become available that will allow for more structures to be constructed with this project. Culver Town Council, Stellar Committee Prepare for Site Visit

The finishing touches are complete on the Stellar Strategic Investment Plan for submission to the Stellar Communities Designation Program committee for the Town of Culver.

Culver Town Manager Jonathan Leist said Union Township submitted a letter of support toward the project along with a $40,000 contribution toward the effort. The Marshall County Community Foundation, in coordination with the Vonnegut Fund through the organization, contributed $80,000 toward the bike and pedestrian trail project and Elkay Manufacturing is partnering with the town to provide cabinetry and plumbing fixtures for the proposed Sandhill Farm workforce development housing project.
