The Culver Community Schools Corporation has gotten a waiver related to how the schools track the amount of time students spend learning. The Culver Community Schools Corporation is asking for input on next year’s school calendar. “There’s going to be a survey that’s going to go out next week,” Superintendent Karen Shuman says, “to make sure that we get community and parent input on our school calendar for the ’19-’20 school year.” She says school officials don’t have any specific changes in mind yet, but instead would like to make a decision based on the data received from the survey.
The Culver Community Schools Corporation referendum passed, according to the majority voters who cast a ballot in the four districts that make up the corporation.
The Culver Community Schools Corporation is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, but school officials are also looking to the future, as next month’s referendum approaches. Superintendent Karen Shuman passed out special 50th anniversary pins to school board members Monday. “It is a significant end, when we talk about the referendum, that we wish to be here in 50 years,” she said, “and as you’ve seen, the signs have gone up.”
Culver Community Schools will be holding registration next Monday and Tuesday. It will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday and 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Culver Schools Administration Office. Online pre-registration is already open.
The State of Indiana has awarded more than $14 million in this year’s round of Secured School Safety grants. The program provides a 50-50 match to help schools buy security equipment, hire resource officers, or conduct threat assessments.
Declining enrollment and state funding continue to cause concerns for the Culver Community Schools Corporation. In an update to the school board last week, Corporation Treasurer Casey Howard said that enrollment was about 1,073 students during the 2009-2010 school year. She said it’s now just under 739 students.
Some local school corporations saw their letter grades improve slightly, while others remained flat. On Wednesday, the Indiana State Board of Education finalized the A-to-F grades for each of the state’s school corporations for the 2016-2017 school year.
The A through F School Accountability Grades for the 2016-2017 school year were released this week by the Indiana Department of Education. Locally, Triton, as well as some Plymouth Schools showed improvement from the year before.
