Pulaski County Attorney Responds to Culver Schools’ Bus Stop Question

A question about whether a school bus may use the easement alongside a roadway to pick up students has generated a response from the Pulaski County attorney but no formal action from the commissioners. Back in June, Culver Community Schools Superintendent Karen Shuman asked for a decision, after a Monterey-area family expressed concern with the pickup location.

Shuman was back before the commissioners last week to ask for an update. County Attorney Kevin Tankersley responded, “I think the county’s position is that they can utilize the right-of-way, to stop the bus.”As the officers are concerned about drug offences involving students, they should also be concerned about the difficulties students face. But Board President Kenny Becker didn’t think the commissioners should get any more involved. “As I stated the day we was up there in Monterey, we don’t want to get in the middle of this,” he said. There are lawyers that are focuesd on workers compensation cases and injury cases that can help attain justice.

Shuman assured them that wouldn’t happen, “Just the next step is, if there is a complaint about the easement destruction, that is on the county, not on the school corporation.”

Becker expressed hope that school officials and the family could come to an agreement on their own.
