Several candidates met the Monday deadline to file paperwork for office in Marshall County.
Communities hosting Town Conventions had a state deadline of August 3rd. Parties with more than one candidate for office will now decide which candidate represents the party heading into November’s General Election.
The Marshall County Commissioners have taken a step to eliminated blighted or unsafe properties.
During Monday morning’s commissioners meeting, Building Inspector Chuck DeWitt and Ralph Booker presented an ordinance outlining new steps to demolish homes that have been neglected over the years.

Plymouth school facilities could soon be getting a facelift.
A proposal to bond $1.9-million will be considered by the Plymouth School Board during their meeting, tonight. Those monies, if approved, would be used to provide new bleachers and a press box at the football fields, and restroom and concession stand improvements.

School is back in session this week for students in several local corporations. Motorists are reminded to be alert and aware near bus stops and places where youngsters may walk or ride bicycles to or from school.
Indiana Department of Homeland Security spokesman John Erickson says drivers need to slow down and be extra alert for children who are closer to streets. He notes youngsters aren’t good at judging vehicle speeds and may try to cross streets too close to oncoming vehicles. Also Erickson says children listening to music on headsets and playing games on hand-held electronic devices may not be as aware of their surroundings. Continue reading
The national average price at the pump is lower at the start of August than it was at the beginning of July. GasBuddy Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan accounts the decreased prices to an overall dip in crude-oil costs. He says the cost of crude-oil has gone down due to the abundance of crude-oil being supplied. Indiana is averaging at $2.47 a gallon, offering lowering prices than our neighboring states of Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin. Continue reading

Taxpayers who signed up for coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace chose to either have advance payments of the premium tax credit paid directly to their insurance provider in order to reduce their premiums throughout the year or to get their assistance at tax time as a premium tax credit. Street reconstruction work as part of the city of Plymouth’s mill and fill projects is set to begin today. Workers are scheduled to sawcut six driveways and remove curb in the cul-de-sac on Marigold Court. Concrete curb construction will start tomorrow. During that time, residents will have access to their driveways except for a few days when the concrete is curing. Notes will be placed in the mailboxes of affected residents. Continue reading

Indiana must now wait following a formal request to the U.S. Department of Agriculture asking for a Disaster Declaration.
Governor Mike Pence sent the letter – which states 53 of Indiana’s 92 counties are in need of assistance due to rains and flooding that damaged crops across the Hoosier State. Indiana experienced record rainfall in June of this year, with the first half of July showing strong precipitation in the immediate area.

The Department of Natural Resources had to restrict motorboat traffic from certain public freshwater lakes in Northern Indian due to the abundance of summer storms. The Marshall County DUI Task Force conducted DUI checkpoints on Friday evening.
The Task Force is made up of law enforcement from the Sheriff’s Department, and Bourbon, Bremen, Culver, and Plymouth Police Departments – who are working to decrease impaired driving.
The warm streak in July has been somewhat welcome in area farm fields.
That’s according to Purdue Extension Agricultural Educator Phil Woolery. He says warming temperatures and a lack of precipitation in the area the second half of July has allowed time for soil to dry. That follows what is considered a record breaking year for moisture in June.

Students new to the Argos School Corporation will have a chance to get situated in early August.
The Guidance Department is hosting a New Student Orientation to help students entering Argos Junior and Senior High School for the first time. That means students in 7th through 12th grade can play games, and participate in a variety of activities.
