Area Educators Monitoring Teacher Salary, School Referendum Bills

Local educators are keeping an eye on some education-related bills in this year’s state legislative session. Raising teacher salaries was identified as a priority in Governor Eric Holcomb’s State of the State address. But Plymouth Education Association President Laura Kruyer told the school board last week that she’s been disappointed with the bills that have followed, saying that they’ve lost the momentum.

Plymouth School Board Recognizes Dance Marathon Participants, Retiring Staff Members

Plymouth High School students raised more than $44,500 for Riley Children’s Hospital during this year’s Dance Marathon. That’s more than $4,500 over this year’s goal. The Dance Marathon participants were congratulated during Tuesday’s school board meeting by Board President Todd Samuelson, who noted how much the event has grown over the years.

Financial Aid Workshops to be Held Next Weekend for College Goal Sunday

Students planning to attend college next fall will be able to get some free help with some of the paperwork next weekend. As part of College Goal Sunday, financial aid professionals around the state will be hosting workshops on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). It needs to be filed by April 15, in order for students to qualify for federal and state grants, scholarships, and student loans.

Progress Continues at New Lincoln Junior High School, Despite Weather Challenges

Crews continue to make progress on the new Lincoln Junior High School, despite the recent stretch of cold weather. Plymouth School Superintendent Andy Hartley told the school board Tuesday that work got set back a little over a week because it was simply too cold for workers. But he said they’re working hard to get back on track, and the slight delay poses no major concerns for the project’s overall schedule.

Police Respond to Possible Burglary, Reportedly Find Meth, Pills Instead

A report of a possible burglary reportedly led to the discovery of methamphetamine Sunday morning. Starke County Police say they, along with Hamlet and Walkerton police, responded to a possible burglary in progress call at around 6:30 a.m. Officers say that when they got there, they determined that no burglary took place, but they did find methamphetamine, prescription pills, syringes, and paraphernalia.

Plymouth Board of Works Updated on Water Tower Repainting, Building Permit Software Change

Upcoming work at Plymouth’s north water tower was discussed during last week’s board of works meeting.

Utility Superintendent Donnie Davidson reported that Dixon Engineering has completed specifications for repainting the water tower, according to Clerk-Treasurer Jeanine Xaver, and board members agreed to let him proceed with advertising for contractors.
