Meeting Scheduled to Discuss Reese Theater Preservation, Other Local Landmarks

A Plymouth landmark is a step closer to preservation. Ownership of the Rees Theater was transferred to the Wythougan Valley Preservation Council on Jan. 26. That places the building into 501c3 nonprofit status, which qualifies it for various grants and philanthropic community gifting to fund restoration efforts. Continue reading

Award-Winning Bicentennial Torch Relay Documentary Available for Order

Indiana’s historic, 92-county bicentennial torch relay has been condensed into a 37 minute documentary. “Everlasting Light: The Story of Indiana’s Bicentennial Torch Relay” was produced by the Department of Telecommunications at Ball State University. The Indiana Office of Tourism Development commissioned the project to preserve the event for future generations. Continue reading

Indiana Gets Mostly F’s in Latest State of Tobacco Control Report

The American Lung Association’s 2016 State of Tobacco Control Report finds Indiana is failing in its efforts to reduce tobacco use. The 15th annual report grades states and the federal government on policies to prevent and reduce tobacco use. It notes Indiana has not increased the age of sale for tobacco products to 21 and has one of the lowest tobacco tax rates in the country. Continue reading

New Prairie School Corp. Officials Initiate Crisis Plan Following Student’s Death

A LaPorte County community is mourning the sudden death of a high school student. The 17-year-old boy was taking part in an intramural basketball game at New Prairie High School Monday evening, according to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department. They were dispatched along with LaPorte County EMS and Kankakee Township Fire Department First Responders to the school around 7:25 p.m. Continue reading
