Police-Involved Shooting Suspect Gets 35 Year Sentence

Lane Dodson

The Marshall County man found guilty of attempted murder by a jury last month following a 2014  police-involved shooting in the Plymouth Kmart parking lot is heading to prison.

Lane Dodson was pulled over on Dec. 29, 2014 for questioning about an earlier battery report. He reportedly raised a handgun and started shooting at officers. They returned fire, and Dodson was injured.

Dodson and his attorney deny he ever pointed or fired a gun. Marshall County Prosecutor Nelson Chipman said there was clear evidence that he did, including a bullet hole and two shell casings found in his vehicle. Dodson’s attorney argued the shell casings could have been there before the incident.

Dodson underwent several surgeries following the shooting and is still receiving medical care.

A Marshall County jury found him guilty of attempted murder, intimidation and two counts of domestic battery after deliberating for about 90 minutes last month.

According to WNDU-TV he was sentenced yesterday to 35 years in prison for attempted murder, three years for intimidation and one year each for the two domestic battery counts. The sentences will be served concurrently, for a total of 35 years.

Indiana law requires at least 75 percent of a sentence be served, so Dodson will spend at least 26 years behind bars, unless he successfully appeals his conviction. He has 30 days to file an appeal and has indicated he intends to initiate that process.
