Bremen School Board Approves Teachers’ Contract

The Bremen School Board held a special session on Monday to approve their master teacher contract prior the November 15th deadline set by the Indiana Education Employment Relation Board.

Superintendent Dr. Jim White stated that the salary of a beginning teacher with no prior experience is set at $34,000 and an experienced teacher can make up to $70,000 depending on certain factors. Continue reading

Triton Elementary School Principal Appointed to Superintendent’s Position

Triton Elementary School Principal Jeremy Riffle was officially approved as the new superintendent of Triton at a school board meeting Monday night. Superintendent Donna Burroughs said now that the superintendent position is filled, the board members will be working to find a new elementary school principal.

“We won’t start an official search until next April. We’re naming an interim acting principal in the meantime.” Burroughs explained, “Jeremy is in the process of setting all that up and that will be a part of the December board agenda.” Continue reading

Plymouth Students Recognize Manufacturing Day with Tours Around Town

Today, various businesses around town will have a chance to meet the next generation of workers as more than 260 Plymouth High School students tour facilities as a part of Manufacturing Day.

In a media advisory, the Marshall County Economic Development Corporation said this national event gives manufacturers the opportunity to open their doors to showcase their businesses and foster an interest in manufacturing careers.

The number of local businesses involved increased from 2016 and the ones participating are considered to better reflect the variety of work opportunities in Plymouth. Continue reading

Winter Weather Preparedness Week

It is Winter Weather Preparedness Week and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security is encouraging Hoosiers to become better equipped to deal with the approaching winter season.

IDHS provided a couple of tips to help inspire individuals to be actively involved with winter preparedness now through November 18th.

Use this week to create or maintain a home readiness kit that may be needed during winter storms. Kits should include a first aid kit and necessary medications, extra clothing, shoes and blankets as well as copies of important documents such a photo ID and Social Security cards. It would be helpful to have a battery-powered or hand crank radio and flashlight. Also include food and water for up to three days, with one gallon of water per person per day. Continue reading

The Bread of Life Community Food Pantry does so much for Marshall County but currently, the volunteer-driven organization is looking for a little help in return. The interesting thing is that you can help simply by shopping online.

The nonprofit recently moved locations to the north side of Plymouth. They have the option to purchase the building so they are currently fundraising to acquire funds for the down payment of $40,000. The total price of the building is $165,000 and the loan needs to be procured prior to February of 2019.

Santa Claus is Coming to Town a Little Sooner than You’d Think

Santa will be visiting Plymouth a whole month early! On Saturday, November 25th Santa will arrive on a fire truck during the Holiday Parade at 6 p.m.

The parade will be on Michigan Street, starting at Adams Street and ending in River Park Square. Santa will make his way to River Park Square for the tree lighting ceremony. The Park Department will perform a light show after the Christmas tree is lit. When the light show is complete, Santa will be at the Marshall County Museum for photos. Model trains will be running at the museum starting at 11 a.m.

Hot chocolate and cookies will be available all evening. Grab the whole family and come out for a night of festivities featuring Old Saint Nick as the guest of honor.

Bourbon Traffic Stop Results in Three Arrests

A few hours after midnight on Sunday, Bourbon Police Officer Adam Kraning conducted a traffic stop on south Main Street at 13th Trail, according to a media advisory.

In a police report written by Kraning, he said he stopped driver Jared Whitfield for traffic and vehicle violations shortly before 2:30 a.m. The officer said that while speaking with Whitfield he smelled the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the vehicle and the driver’s breathe. Community Provides Input to Senator Donnelly at Ancilla Farm Bill Listening Session

On Friday, Senator Joe Donnelly visited the Ancilla College campus to hold a listening session over the farm bill that is currently being written. Before Donnelly talked with group gathered in Cana Hall about business, he got comfortable by removing his tie and greeting individuals in the crowd.

Ancilla President Kenneth Zirkle began the event by briefly discussing the agriculture program at the college, stating that when they started two and half years ago they only had three individuals involved, now that number is up to nearly 50 agriculture students.

Agriculture director Tim McLochlin introduced the senator, but first he acknowledged all the community members who help make Ancilla’s agriculture program so immersive and impactful.

During the session, various individuals voiced their concerns about the needs of the agriculture community. One individual spoke about how the current farm bill does little to help the dairy industry and suggested that more needs to be done with supply and control management. Many people spoke about the importance of family-run farms and asked Senator Donnelly to build the bill with generational farms in mind. Continue reading

You’re Invited to the Ribbon Cutting for the New INDOT Sub-District Facility

This Tuesday, community members are invited to attend the ribbon-cutting event for the new INDOT Sub-district facility in Plymouth. The event will commence at 11 a.m.

A ground-breaking ceremony was held for this facility back in August of 2016. The original structure dated back to 1978 and was no longer able to meet modern needs.

Shortly after the ribbon cutting ceremony, Plymouth Mayor Mark Senter will dedicate the road serving the new facility as Jack Greenlee Drive, in honor of a former city councilman and mayor. Jack Greenlee served as a city councilman for many years and served as Mayor of Plymouth for two terms from January of 1992 through December of 1999. Mayor Greenlee passed away in March of 2015. Senter will dub this road with his name as a way to honor his service to the community and commemorate his memory. Continue reading

American Heart Association Seeks Donations for the Little Hats, Big Hearts Program

Can you knit or crochet? Your skills are needed to help the American Heart Association with their Little Hats, Big Hearts program.

Now through December 31st the AHA is collecting knitted or crocheted red baby hats to distribute in Indiana hospitals in the month of February, American Heart Month. The program is meant to raise awareness of heart disease, the number one killer of Americans and congenital heart defects, the most common birth defect in the country.

They are seeking hats for newborns and preemies made of red yarn that is either cotton or acrylic, medium to heavy weight that can be machine washed and dried. Don’t worry if you’re not the knitting or crocheting type, yarn can also be donated to the cause. Continue reading

Local Police Departments to Participate in State-Wide Enforcement

The chances of being involved in an automobile accident increase greatly around the Thanksgiving holiday season since more drivers are utilizing the roadways. Driving under the influence or failing to wear your seat belt can make matters even worse.

Although the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute and Purdue University Center for Road Safety estimate that 93 percent of Hoosiers buckle up, last year more than half of Indiana’s fatal crashes involved drivers and passengers not wearing seat belts. Impaired-driving also did quite a bit of damage in 2016, resulting in nearly 2,100 injuries and more than 210 fatalities.

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department and the Plymouth and Bourbon Police Departments will join forces with more than 230 law-enforcement agencies across the state to spot violations to the Indiana seat belt and impaired driving laws. Through the weekend after Thanksgiving, expect to see an increase in saturation patrols and checkpoints and more random patrols. Continue reading

Bremen Police Department Joins Operation Pull Over Blitz 92

The end of the year is a time where many motorists travel more frequently in order to visit friends and family for various festivities.

The Thanksgiving holiday in particular is one of the busiest times for Americans traveling on the roadways. In 2015, more than 380 individuals died in the U.S. during the traditional four-day Thanksgiving weekend.

To help keep the streets safer this season, the Bremen Police Department is teaming up with hundreds of law enforcement agencies across the state for Operation Pull Over Blitz 92. The enforcement period will take place from November 10th through December 3rd. Continue reading

Senator Donnelly to Talk Future Farm Bill at Ancilla Tomorrow

This Friday, Senator Joe Donnelly will hold a farm bill listening session in Cana Hall on the Ancilla College campus.

Senator Donnelly is a member of the US Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry. The current farm bill is scheduled to expire next year so Donnelly is seeking public input about agricultural matters, specifically farm policy issues that are integral to consider when the new farm bill is being written. Democratic Party to Hold Gala Dinner at Local Establishment this Sunday

Marshall County Democrat Chairman Jim Smart announced that this year’s Democrat Gala Dinner will be held on Sunday, November 12 at Opie’s Deli and Office in downtown Plymouth. Social hour will start at 4 p.m. and the dinner portion will commence at 5:30 p.m.

Smart added that he is pleased to see that three qualified candidates will run in the May primary and the winner will eventually face incumbent Jackie Walorski for the 2nd District Congressional seat in November of 2018. Continue reading

Triton School Board Holds Special Session Over Superintendent Contract

The Triton School Board held a special session Monday evening to discuss the superintendent’s contract. The current superintendent, Donna Burroughs, announced her retirement back in September.

The board has been interviewing candidates for the position and recently came to a decision about who will fill the open position. Burroughs said state law mandates that school boards must hold a public hearing over the superintendent’s contract for the sake of clarity and in case anyone wishes to implement a change. Made in Marshall County Continues Today

The Marshall County Economic Development Corporation wants to link local businesses to students who are familiarizing themselves with potential career paths. That is why the MCEDC hosts the Made in Marshall County event, where companies have the opportunity to appeal directly to prospective employees.

Due to last year’s success, the event this year was expanded to take place over two days and includes more than 800 students from across Marshall County. Yesterday, participating businesses had the chance to connect with around 650 students about their specific products, workplaces and potential career paths.

Today, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Swan Lake Resort and Conference Center businesses will discuss job openings and internship opportunities with approximately 170 high school seniors. Continue reading

Ancilla Domini Community Choir and Orchestra to Perform Handel’s Messiah

The Ancilla Domini Community Choir and Orchestra is performing George Frideric Handel’s Messiah on Saturday, November 18th at 7 p.m. in the Ancilla Domini Chapel at The Center for Donaldson.

Choir and orchestra members started rehearsing back in September and later this month, they’ll perform their version of Handel’s Messiah, one of the most immensely popular and widely performed pieces of Christian music.

The performance will be conducted by Andrew Jennings, who is the director of the Ancilla Domini Community Choir, a voice instructor at Ancilla and the director of liturgy and music for the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ. Continue reading

Gauvin Monaghan Pleads Guilty to November 2016 Murder of Marshall County Man

According to information provided by the Marshall County Prosecutor’s Office, in a last minute arrangement Monday morning, Gauvin Monaghan was brought before Judge Robert O. Bowen to plead guilty to the murder of 78-year-old Richard “Paul” Costello in November of 2016.

During the brief court proceedings, Judge Bowen advised Monaghan of his various rights and the terms of his plea agreement. By pleading guilty to the single count of murder, all other counts were dismissed including conspiracy to commit murder, burglary, auto theft and a separate count of theft.

The press release indicates that Monaghan addressed the Judge’s questions with very quiet, one word answers and said he was asked to speak louder more than once. When asked how he pled, Monaghan said he was guilty of murder. Continue reading

Plymouth Schools to Host a Variety of Veterans Day Programs

This Friday, Plymouth Schools will be holding a few different programs in honor of Veterans Day.

To start off the day, members of the Plymouth High School student council will be hosting a breakfast from 7:45 a.m. until 8:45 a.m. Local veterans are encouraged to contact the school corporation ahead of time to reserve their spot.
