Inmate Programs Will Soon be Expanded at the Marshall County Jail

In a recent media advisory, Marshall County Sheriff Matthew Hassel, in collaboration with Marshall County Community Corrections, proudly announced the expansion of current Inmate Programs offered at the County Jail.

The newly introduced Marshall County Jail Chemical Addictions Program (MCJCAP) aims to give men and women struggling with addictions a second chance. The program will incorporate existing Moral Reconation Therapy with the Smart Recovery Substance Abuse Program and Fatherhood Initiative Program as well as group and individual life skills coaching. Bremen High School Senior Named Recipient of MCCF 2018 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship

Bremen High School Senior Emma Hundt has been named the Marshall County Community Foundation 2018 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar.

As the recipient of the 2018 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship, she will receive a four-year, full tuition scholarship to the Indiana college of her choice, as well as a $900 annual stipend for required equipment and books. After graduation, Hundt plans to pursue a major in Engineering at Purdue University.  Continue reading

Plymouth Bus Drivers’ to Host a Food Drive this Saturday

This Saturday, bus drivers for Plymouth Community Schools will be tackling a different kind of drive; a food drive.

On Saturday, December 16th, drivers are holding the ‘Stuff a Bus Food Drive’ in order to benefit the Marshall County Neighborhood Center and the Bread of Life Food Pantry. Drivers will be stationed in the Walmart parking lot in Plymouth from 9 a.m. until noon.

They’ll be collecting nonperishable food items in an attempt to fill an entire bus with supplies that will assist local families in need. Come out this Saturday and help Plymouth bus drivers collect enough food to drive away hunger this holiday season.

Culver Community School Students Receive Career Pathway Presentations

Last week, while Culver Community Schools were conducting NWEA testing, they concurrently held Career Pathway Presentations for some junior and senior high school students.

Superintendent Karen Shuman shared that one of the speakers was school board member Bill Sonnemaker. He came and spoke to students about working as an engineer for 40 years. He told them how he worked in the aero-space industry and provided some details about particular projects he tackled within that field.

U.S. Marshal Phone Scam Alert

If you receive a call from someone claiming to be a U.S. Marshal, be wary of their instructions. The Federal Trade Commission is warning people about a recent scam involving impostors threatening individuals with arrest in order to get money from them.

Consumer Education Specialist Bridget Small said that U.S. Marshals do a lot of things, they protect the federal courts, track down dangerous fugitives and transport thousands of prisoners. What they don’t do is make calls and threaten to arrest people or fine them for missing jury duty. Continue reading

Pre-K Program at Culver Community Schools Will Not Be Implemented in January, Could Possibly Start Next School Year

A decision has been made to not move forward with a Pre-Kindergarten program at Culver Community Schools in January of next year. However, according to Superintendent Karen Shuman that doesn’t mean it is completely out of the question.

Shuman said, “We do hope to come next school year, when we do kindergarten round-up we’ll be doing a pre-k round-up at the same time.” The superintendent explained that they’ll determine whether or not to implement a program depending on the number of people who attend the round-up for children who would be heading into preschool. Culver Community School Board Establishes System to Review Policies

Policies adoption was the main focus of the Culver Community School Board meeting that took place Monday night.

Superintendent Karen Shuman said that some of the policies and procedures were already in place but the board needed to have a first reading in order for them to be entered into the system. She said one policy that was noticeably changed had to do with background checks.

New Graduation Pathways Approved by Indiana State Board of Education This Week

On Wednesday, the Indiana State Board of Education(SBOE) approved several new graduation pathways for Hoosier high school students beginning with the 2019 freshman class.

Christmas at The Center at Donaldson This Sunday

Center at Donaldson will be hosting their Christmas event on Sunday, December 10th. The event will kick-off with the children’s choral performance at 3 p.m. ET, followed by family activities from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m.

As winter weather approaches driving conditions will become more hazardous with an increase of snow and ice on the roadways during the coming months.

Marshall County Sheriff Matt Hassel and members of the Sheriff’s Department have a few tips for motorists to ensure everyone has a safe and happy holiday season.

They advise drivers to clean snow and ice from all vehicle windows before driving. Also make sure there is enough fuel in your gas tank to reach your destination. Keep blankets and warm clothing in your vehicle in case of an emergency. Continue reading

Plymouth Students Show State Superintendent What it Means to Code Like a Girl

Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Jennifer McCormick visited Plymouth yesterday to learn about the Girls Who Code (GWC) Club at Riverside Intermediate School. The Girls Who Code Club at Plymouth Schools incorporates students from 6th grade up to senior year. The club currently has girls from Riverside, Lincoln Jr. High school and St. Michael’s Catholic School.

The club sponsor and founder of Plymouth’s chapter of Girls Who Code, Tara Sharp, said she heard of the national program through an episode of 60 Minutes and promptly registered as a GWC site. Sharp mentioned that she believes Plymouth pioneered the program within the state of Indiana. Continue reading

Discover Argos 12 Days of Christmas Contest

Local businesses in the newly founded Discover Argos collaborative will be hosting a unique holiday contest in the near future.

On Saturday, December 9th participating businesses will begin handing out “passport cards” according to committee chairperson Judy Richards, the owner of the business Timeless Treasures.

She said each business will have a hidden theme related to the 12 days of Christmas. For example, one store will be given the theme of a partridge in a pear tree, another will have five golden rings, and so on and so forth. Marshall County Sheriff’s Department Investigates Burglary on Muckshaw Road

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating a burglary that took place in the 1500 block of Muckshaw Road.

The incident was reported shortly after 5 a.m. this morning. Individuals alerted police that an unknown person(s) gained entry into their home and stole items from inside the residence.

An investigation is being conducted and anyone with information pertaining to this case is encouraged to contact the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department at 574-936-3187.

Parent College Night at Lincoln Junior High School

Lincoln Jr. High School in Plymouth will be hosting its second annual parent college night from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. tonight. All 7th and 8th grade students, as well as their parents are invited to attend this informative program.

The “Launch Your Future Now” event will explore a number of topics related to preparation for college and careers beyond high school. Parents will also be informed about what is being done at Lincoln to help students prepare. Continue reading

Argos Town Council Members Receive Presentation About Local Business Group ‘Discover Argos’

Local business owner Judy Richards came before the Argos Town Council last month, seeking permission to utilize the town’s name in the title a local business group.

Richards explained that group would be called Discover Argos and would work to benefit local businesses, while simultaneously assisting the town as a whole.

“We spoke with the Town Council about why we needed this committee which was because it will benefit Argos by creating more jobs, more housing, downtown improvements, more events for the local residents to go to which will in turn mean less travel for local residents.” She explained, “It will benefit our business owners because that means more visitors to Argos.” Continue reading

Argos Town Council Continues Conversation Over Development at Colonial Estates

Argos officials continue to seek ways to spur development in the town. Back in April, the town approved the purchase of Colonial Estates for residential development.

When the Argos Town Council members met in mid-November, they continued their discussion with Attorney Derek Jones about options for potential housing development and infrastructure installation in the area.

Jones explained that right now, town representatives are still in the preliminary stages of planning, “Colonial Estates has some vacant lots that are owned by the Argos Redevelopment Commission and there’s basically just an interest from the Redevelopment Commission’s perspective and I guess the town council as well, to get some housing going out there.” Continue reading
