Two new officers were sworn into active duty with the Plymouth Police Department this week.
Large Culver Sign to be Replaced
The large-scale Culver sign at the Culver Town Park will be replaced by the time WinterFest begins on Friday, Feb. 9.
Park Superintendent Anna Campbell told the Culver Town Council members this week that the sign spelling out C-U-L-V-E-R will go in the same place where the plywood sign is now. A mock-up placard that describes the history of the name of the Lake Maxinkuckee town will be included next to the sign until a more concrete structure an be constructed.
Plymouth Officials to Discuss Traffic Changes with Residents on Plum Street
The Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety members and street department officials are going to contact homeowners in the 500 block of N. Plum Street to communicate possible traffic changes at the intersection with Jefferson Street.
In past discussions, parking along that road has led to complaints of safety and the lack of room for two-way traffic. Members of Plymouth EMS, Fire and Police Departments have reported congestion issues when utilizing that road to respond to emergency calls.
Bremen Downtown Revitalization Preparation Moves Forward
Preparations for a downtown revitalization project in Bremen are moving along. That’s according to Bremen Director of Operations Trend Weldy.
“JPR started inspections in the basements in all of our downtown businesses and all of the sidewalks,” said Weldy “They’re in all of the buildings downtown inspecting the basements to make sure there aren’t any stairways we didn’t know about or vaults we didn’t know about. So they’re in the process of doing that.”
Marshall County Council Approves Appropriation for Community Crossings
The Marshall County Council members voted to appropriate money toward the Beech Road paving project as a Community Crossings project.
E&B Paving worked on resurfacing Beech Road from U.S. 6 to 3B Road last year. The project was included in the 2017 projects to be done in 2018, but the project was complete in 2017 as Highway Supervisor Jason Peters preferred that work to be done as soon as possible.
Culver WinterFest Set for February
WinterFest organizer Tony Sellers gave the Culver Town Council an update on tentative plans for the event during the weekend of February 9-11.
John Glenn School Board Approves 2018-2019 School Calendar
The John Glenn School Board members Tuesday night took action to approve the 2018-2019 school calendar.
Session I summer school classes begin June 5 with session II beginning July 9. Online registration for classes opens Wednesday, Aug. 1 with in-person student registration on Thursday, Aug. 2 from 12:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Classes begin on Tuesday, Aug. 14.
Judge Makes Decision in Restitution Reimbursement Motion
A hearing regarding the return of restitution to former Marshall County Highway Superintendent Neal Haeck was held in Marshall County Superior Court No. 1 before Judge Robert O. Bowen Thursday morning.
Haeck and his attorney, Stanley Wruble, filed a motion requesting the return of restitution and Community Corrections fees after the Indiana Court of Appeals overturned Haeck’s conviction on a theft charge in 2016.
County Council Considers Grant Request for Narcan Kits
Marshall County Sheriff Matt Hassel approached the county council members Monday morning with a grant request to apply for Naloxone rescue kits.
“There’s no match or salaries attached to the grant,” explained Hassel. “Simply we agree to submit a report to the Indiana Department of Health when we use the test kits. This would enable the staff at the jail and my patrol deputies to be able to administer Narcan if we have an opiate overdose.”
Removal of Tanks at Old Bremen Gas Station Reveals Issue
The removal of the old underground gas tanks from the old Clark gas station at the corner of State Road 106 and State Road 331 in Bremen has revealed a unique issue.
Bremen Director of Operations Trend Weldy said the demolition company found some other type of material to remove.
Plymouth BOW Discusses Intergovernmental Agreement
The Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety members discussed the intergovernmental agreement between the city and the county for planning services when they met Monday night.
According to Clerk-Treasurer Jeanine Xaver, the board members learned that the Marshall County Commissioners amended the agreement to pay Planning Director Ralph Booker for the first three months in 2018 and then conduct an evaluation of work in order to continue on with the contract for the next quarter. The board members agreed to the amendment.
Culver Town Council Gets Update on Winter Operations
The winter weather has put a dent in the Town of Culver’s road salt supply.
Town Manager Jonathan Leist told the Culver Town Council members Tuesday night that half of the town’s salt supply has been used to help clear roads in town so far this season. He assured the council members that the town’s contract with the salt supplier allows the town to purchase more at the current rate if the supply reaches a critical level.
John Glenn School Board Reorganizes for 2018, Plans Work Session
The John Glenn School Board members reorganized the makeup of the board during their meeting Tuesday night. Janice Ryan was elected as school board president while Dennis Holland will serve as vice president. Christian Mattix was voted as board secretary.
Residents Notify Officials of Fraudulent NIPSCO Calls
NIPSCO officials are warning customers that calls are being made by unknown callers claiming to be affiliated with NIPSCO.
According to officials, the callers are contacting customers demanding payment through a prepaid card. The calls are fraudulent.
Support Given for Fingerprint Machine Purchase
The Marshall County Council members discussed the purchase of an iTouch Biometric Fingerprint system for the probation department.
Sheriff Matt Hassel presented the request to the Marshall County Commissioners in December who supported the effort. He presented the same information to the county council Monday morning.
Bremen Police Department to Get New K9
The Bremen Police Department will be getting a new K9. The Bremen Town Council members approved funding for the purchase of a new dog from Vohne Liche Kennels in Denver, Indiana.
Marshall County Council Discusses Engineer/Director Salary
The Marshall County Council members discussed a salary range for the Marshall County Engineer/Director position this week.
While the position has yet to be filled, a salary ordinance amendment was put before the council for consideration Monday morning. The range of pay is $62,837-$76,800. The highway administrative manager position will be defunded so the balance of that salary can be transferred to whatever the salary will be for the highway engineer/director position. An additional appropriation will be sought to fulfill the required salary when a person is hired.
Culver Town Council Passes Traffic Ordinance
The Culver Town Council members heard public comments concerning the proposed traffic ordinance.
Council Vice President Sally Ricciardi read a citizen’s letter into the record that discussed safety concerns for emergency vehicles and residents maneuvering around the streets that are narrow. One street mentioned was Ohio Street and portions of that street will have no parking as part of the ordinance. The resident also mentioned the noise level of semi truck idling in residential neighborhoods and parking of the tractor trailers on residential streets.
Two Arrested on Warrants for Dealing Drugs
Plymouth Police officers arrested two people in separate incidents who were wanted for dealing drugs.
On Monday, Jan. 8, officers stopped 29-year-old Wayne Austin Hardesty, of Grovertown, who was reportedly speeding and found that he had an active warrant for two counts of dealing in a schedule III drug. He was booked in the Marshall County Jail on those charges with a cash bond of $10,005.
Marshall County Council Approves Pledge Toward Multi-Purpose Building Grant
The Marshall County Council approved action on Monday morning to pledge funds toward the Marshall County 4-H Fair Board Association’s OCRA grant proposal for a multi-purpose building at the fairgrounds in Argos.
Angel Balsley explained that the project was not awarded the OCRA grant request in the fall for the $500,000 grant request but the application will be submitted again in an additional grant round in February. She approached the council members Monday morning with a funding request to help the fair board obtain the grant.
