Marshall County Commissioners Approve Culver Community School Corporation Police Department Agreement, Purchase of Police Interceptors

Marshall County Sheriff Matt Hassel presented the commissioners with an agreement between the county and the Culver Community School Corporation Police Department.

The agreement allows the Sheriff’s Department to ask for assistance from the Culver Community School Corporation Police Department in case of an incident that might require mutual aid. There was a previous question on how the agreement would impact the county’s insurance but a closer look found that there would be no impact on insurance.

The commissioners unanimously approved the agreement.

The commissioners also unanimously approved a request from Sheriff Hassel to apply for the annual Comprehensive Hoosier Highways Injury Reduction Program (CHIRP) grant through the state in the amount of $29,900. In the past, CHIRP was known as the Operation Pullover and seat belt enforcement grant.

Sheriff Hassel also presented quotes for three new police vehicles for 2025. He recommended that the commissioners approve the quote from Oliver Ford in Plymouth for police interceptors over the Auto Park quote. There is a $600 difference in price, but Sheriff Hassel told the commissioners that the officers prefer the Ford model over the Dodge Model as there is more interior room and the Fords perform better when officers respond to emergency situations. The cost is $44,695 for each of the Ford models. The commissioners approved the quote from Oliver Ford for the reasons given.

The three vehicles that will be replaced will be sold at auction.

The commissioners also approved a quote for $22,745 out of the Commissary Fund so the sheriff can purchase a 2021 transport van from Auto Park in Plymouth. He will be trading in the older 2013 transport van. There is a trade-in allowance of $10,000.
