Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety Takes Action on Unsafe Property

The Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety members took action on an unsafe property at 222 W. Laporte Street.

Building Commissioner Dennis Manuwal, Jr. presented a recommendation to the board members to take action as the property owner has not complied with requests to make necessary repairs to a faulty deck at the front of residence.

An unsafe order was sent in February by registered mail and Manuwal said the owner refused the letter and was returned in the latter part of February. The owner had 30 days to comply and did not. He had 60 days to make necessary repairs and they have not been done.

Manuwal said he could order a contractor to go in to do it and the city could put a judgment lien on the property for the cost of the work, but recommended that a fine of up to $2,500 be implemented for non-compliance. If repairs are done within 30 days, the fine could be waived. It is another fine of up to $1,000 every 90 days for non-compliance.

The board members agreed that the repairs are needed as it is a safety issue. Manuwal said he has received several complaints on the property.

The property owner could come before the board members during their next meeting Monday, May 13 at 6 p.m. ET if there is a desire to discuss the matter further with the board.

In the end, the board unanimously approved a motion to impose a $2,500 fine, but will defer the fine if the owner complies with the order.
