Bremen Town Council Takes Public Comment on Animal Ordinance

The Bremen Town Council members opened their meeting to public comment Monday, March 25 to ask for residents’ opinions on the animal ordinance, specifically the allowance of chickens within the incorporated boundaries of the Town of Bremen.

Four people spoke, including an Elementary-aged student, who are in favor of the allowance of chickens. They spoke of the benefit of having the chickens for sustainability, the availability of eggs, educational and responsibility aspects for 4-H projects, the use of waste for fertilizer, and for recreational or pet purposes.

It was stated that other communities that allow chickens have certain regulations such as the requirement of coops, maintenance, and the number allowed at each residence. No roosters are allowed in other ordinances in other municipalities.

Bremen Town Council President Michael Leman stated that he has spoken to several residents who are against amending the ordinance to allow chickens. Director of Operations Keith Fraine agreed saying that he has had the same negative responses.

Regardless, the council will look at the ordinance to see what compromises could be considered to potentially amend the ordinance.

The council took the comments under advisement.
