Tobacco Coordinator Approaches Bourbon Town Council on Smoke Free Policy for the Parks

Annette Haining, Tobacco Education Coordinator for Marshall County, approached the Bourbon Town Council to seek approval for a Smoke Free Policy or Ordinance to be written for the Bourbon Parks.

Haining said a Smoke Free Policy would be beneficial for the community for health reasons, to reduce second hand smoke, and would be good for the environment.

Haining confirmed with Bourbon Clerk-Treasurer Kim Berger that there is no current policy or ordinance for the town at this time.

The City of Plymouth has a policy, the Town of Culver has an Ordinance, and the Marshall County Parks and Recreation has a policy.

Policies are enforced by word of mouth and advertising or signage whereas ordinances can include a fine for a violation.

Haining offered to help provide signage which could include the Town of Bourbon logo.

Vice President Les McFarland and member Terry Clemens recommended that an ordinance be considered since it has greater enforceability.

Attorney Alex Hoover will work on verbiage to update the current ordinance to include public restrictions in the parks and will present it to the Council for consideration in a future meeting.
