John Glenn School Superintendent Christopher Winchell updated the school board last week on the progress in obtaining used school buses for the corporation.
He stated that after the mechanics and staff in the John Glenn Transportation Department looked at the buses, the John Glenn School Board’s counsel was tasked with drafting a resolution that would be approved by both the John Glenn and Michigan City School Board members to complete the sale of four used school buses in the amount of $40,000.
The buses would be 2013 78-passenger Bluebird buses.
The increase in the cost of purchasing new buses is putting a strain on the budget so this was thought to be the best route for the corporation at this time.
That resolution is expected to be brought before the school board members at the next meeting Tuesday, August 15.
Transportation Director Will Groves mentioned that he will be working with Corporation Treasurer Tom Bendy as there will be an increase in the number of buses the corporation purchases. There will be a transportation levy appeal to complete that plan, but more details will be worked out as the budget process goes through its course.
Meanwhile, the Transportation Department administration has been working on bus routes for the new school year, including stops to accommodate Greene Township students and to make mobilization easier for students and parents.
At the end of last year, the John Glenn School Board members were presented with a resolution that would annex the Greene Township School into the John Glenn School Corporation from the South Bend Community School Corporation. Both the John Glenn School Board and the South Bend Community School Corporation Boards have approved that document and the full annexation is expected in 2024.
