Marshall County Clerk Jenny Bennitt plans to present a few requests to the Marshall County Commissioners at their next meeting.
Bennitt told the Marshall County Election Board Wednesday morning that she plans to ask the commissioners to have county holidays on Primary Election Day and General Election Day. She explained that Election Days are busy in the Clerk’s Office and it would be added security if only election personnel are present in the Clerk’s Office on Election Day.
The absentee ballots are sorted the day before the election and are put into cabinet cubes in the Election Board meeting room and if it is a regular business day, people are in and out of that room for mail purposes and the room cannot be locked for security. There are also other processes on Election Day where it would be better if the county building is closed to the public and regular workers for the day.
Election Board President Rick Huff also commented that being closed gives everyone a chance to go to the polls to vote.
Additionally, Bennitt will be asking for an increase in poll worker pay in 2024 as a comparison found Marshall County has some of the lowest wages for poll workers in the area.
She plans to present the requests to the commissioners during their August 7 meeting.
