Bourbon Town Council Appoints Member to BZA, Approves Ordinance Authorizing Handguns for Retiring Police Officers

The Bourbon Town Council recently appointed Mike Chapman to the Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) to replace Kris Berger who had previously submitted his resignation.

The council also approved an ordinance authorizing handguns for retiring police officers. Upon previous recommendation; the ordinance includes language that permits the council to issue a handgun not only to officers retiring after 20 years of service but also, under the discretion of the council, to include officers who may have to retire or leave the force early due to illness or injury.

The ordinance passed 2-1 with Council members Terry Clemens and Les McFarland in favor of and Ward Byers against. Byers explained that he was in favor of issuing the handgun to officers retiring at 20 years but voted against due to the additional language that allows for the duty weapon to be issued for reasons beyond the 20-year full retirement achievement.
