Culver Community School Board Approves IDOE Flexibility Waiver

The Culver Community School Board members discussed an Indiana Department of Education flexibility waiver during their meeting Monday night.

Superintendent Karen Shuman explained that three things are being requested as part of the waiver resolution.   The first request is the 180-day waiver where the students would be measured on their achievement based on the number of minutes of instruction rather than days.

Shuman added that the corporation would like to include Sophomores and 7th grade students in the cooperative programs.

“This flexibility waiver would reduce the wage requirement which may allow us to open up other CTE courses to kids regardless of their age,” explained Shuman.  “This would be an expansion to their potential workforce development.”

The last request would be to waive the licensure requirements of certain teachers, with the exception of Special Education teachers.  Shuman said the corporation would like to add an entrepreneurial position and workplace learning instructor.

With the approval of the school board, Shuman will ask the State Board of Education for these waivers.  The school board members unanimously approved a motion to adopt a resolution for the 2023 flexibility waivers.

A ruling will be made by the state board on each individual waiver by the end of April or the end of May.
