Plymouth Man Arrested on Drug Charges Following Traffic Stop in Peru

A Plymouth man was arrested in Peru Sunday, February 12 following a traffic stop in the area of Mexico Road near U.S. 31.

Indiana State Police say a trooper initiated the traffic stop for a traffic violation at 5:30 p.m. ET. While speaking to the driver, 49-year-old Michael Whitfield, the officer noticed possible criminal activity, according to the report.

The trooper utilized his narcotics-detecting dog, Mack, who conducted a free-air sniff around the vehicle.  The dog reportedly gave a positive alert for the presence of illegal narcotics in the vehicle.  During a subsequent search, the officer allegedly found marijuana, three cell phones and drug paraphernalia.  Police say a small plastic bag containing approximately 60 grams of suspected methamphetamine was found on the ground next to the front passenger door of the vehicle.  The report states that Whitfield allegedly threw the bag out of the car.

Whitfield faces preliminary charges of possession of methamphetamine, dealing methamphetamine, obstruction of justice, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and operating a vehicle while having a suspended license.  Formal charges will be determined.

Suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
