Culver Community School Board Updated on Construction Project Timeline

The Culver Community School Board members made several additional approvals regarding the upcoming construction project when they met Monday night.

The board unanimously approved a Sourcewell bid through Fosters for a Robbins Sports Surface to replace the Culver Elementary School gym floor at a cost of $179,631.42.  The gym floor has been replaced in troubled sections in prior years, but this replacement floor should create better quality and safety.

Additionally, the board approved a bid for railings in the High School gym in the amount of $48,790 from the Lee Company.

Superintendent Karen Shuman told the board that she and the project manager with R. Yoder Construction toured the Culver Elementary School and Culver Middle/High School to go over all of the updates planned at both buildings. R. Yoder Construction was approved as the contractor for the project in a previous meeting.

They specifically looked at the ADA compliant changes for the stage at the Elementary School which will be looked at in more detail where a ramp may be a better solution than a lift.  A better design of a ramp in the Middle/High School Auditorium will also be reviewed so change orders may be coming for the board’s approval as those aspects are explored.

A credit may be realized as R. Yoder Construction had demolition of the Middle/High School gym floor and bleachers in its bid, but that will be taken care of by the contractors installing the new floor and bleachers. With that, Shuman said the ceiling tiles may be removed in the gym and a modification of the ceiling design in the Elementary School cafeteria from the hallway to the gym.  Estimates would be provided for those aspects.

The demolition of the gym floor and bleachers could begin as soon as March.

The projects will be paid for through bonds in a process already approved by the board members. The bond projects at the Culver Elementary School include a library renovation, ADA lift for the stage, repaving parking lots, redoing water lines, new boilers, tuckpointing in the masonry, and replacing the gym floor.

Tuckpointing will done at the Middle/High School, along with a FACS (Family and Consumer Science) room renovation, locker room renovation, restroom renovation, band and choir room renovations, gym floor replacement, and the installation of a ramp in the high school auditorium instead of an ADA lift.  Electrical panels will be updated, and pick-up and drop-off in the back of the school building.
