Two Arrested in Welfare Fraud Investigation in Marshall County

Two people were arrested this week following an investigation by the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department and the Indiana Department of Workforce Development of welfare fraud.

Marshall County police say information was obtained by the entities that inmates from various jails and prisons were applying for unemployment while incarcerated.  Inmates reportedly have people not incarcerated complete the online application and weekly vouchers to receive the unemployment funds.

After several months in the investigation, all facts and information were turned over to the Marshall County Prosecutor’s Office.  The amount of money collected from the inmates allegedly exceeded several thousand dollars during incarceration.  Formal charges were filed for welfare fraud which is a Level 6 Felony.

Christina L. Reyes, of Plymouth, was arrested Tuesday, January 17 and booked into the Marshall County Jail on the felony charge, while Shannon J. Sales, of South Bend, was arrested Thursday, January 19 and booked into the Marshall County Jail. 

Suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
