This Week is Winter Weather Preparedness Week!

Governor Eric Holcomb has proclaimed this week as Winter Weather Preparedness Week in Indiana!

Emergency Management officials encourage everyone to take preventative measures to ensure safety before winter weather arrives. Know the terms used by weather forecasters.  A Winter Weather Advisory means that winter weather conditions are expected to cause significant inconveniences and may be hazardous.  A Winter Storm Watch means a storm is possible.  A Winter Storm Warning means to take action as a storm is occurring or will soon occur in the area.  A Blizzard Warning means that snow combined with intense winds can produce near zero visibility, wind chills and seek shelter immediately.

Prepare a preparedness kit to last for least 72 hours for everyone in the household which should include extra food and water, a flashlight and batteries, a battery-powered NOAA weather radio, extra medicine, baby supplies, first aid kit, cash, an emergency heat source, fire extinguisher, and pet supplies.

Let someone know your route of travel if out in inclement weather. A winter storm survival kit for the car is also recommended which should include a cell phone and charger, flashlight, blankets, extra clothing, first aid kit, snack food, tow rope, sand or kitty litter for traction, small shovel, jumper cables, and flares or an orange emergency flag to tie to the antenna.

When driving in the snow, slow down and give snow plows plenty of room to clear roads.
