Bremen Town Council Approves Bid for Storm Water Project

The Bremen Town Council members took action last week to approve a bid for an upcoming storm water project.

The project would include replacing old storm water lines on Center Street from Mill Street and south to the park.

Engineer Ken Jones from Jones Petrie and Rafinski asked the council to approve the low base bid and the alternate bid submitted by Haskins Underground in the amount of $491,737.

“Our engineers got together with the low bidder and we looked at changes that we could make by substituting some pipe,” said Jones.  “One of the biggest things is removing the storm water treatment unit.  Because we are replacing an existing outfall to the creek, or to the ditch, the need to replace that outfall with a treatment unit isn’t required.  That saves like $90,000 right there.”

With that, Jones asked the council to approve the fully submitted bid by Haskins and then once the contract is signed, a change order will be submitted to reduce the amount of the bid by $123,756 to reflect the changes mentioned. That would put the final contract amount at $367,981.

Jones mentioned that the final amount is still above what is available in the fund to pay for the project, but in speaking with Director of Operations Trend Weldy and Clerk-Treasurer Janet Anglemyer a solution is available to make sure the project can be done in its entirety.

Jones commented that the project is one that has needed to be done for a long time.

The council approved the recommendation with a unanimous vote.
