Bremen Town Council Continues Discussion on Golf Cart Issues

The Bremen Town Council members continued a discussion this week on the operation of golf carts in town.

Bremen Town Council President Michael Leman previously brought up an issue with golf carts being driven on walking paths in the park which is not the intention of the walking paths.  He is concerned about safety and enforcement.

The current ordinance states that golf carts are permitted on the streets and alleys in the Town of Bremen, but are strictly prohibited for use on sidewalks and walking trails.  They are also not allowed on state or federal highways, which includes Plymouth Street in Bremen.

The ordinance also includes fines of $100 for the first violation of the ordinance and a $250 fine for the second violation and every subsequent violation.

Town Attorney Anthony Wagner noted that the ordinance only permits golf carts and not ATVs or UTVs, but the council could expand that, if desired.  He also pointed out that drivers are to be 16 years of age or older and must have a State ID or drivers license.

Leman suggested incorporating a registration process and limiting the number of passengers on the golf cart.

Wagner said he will take all input from the council members and create a revised draft of the ordinance to present in a future meeting.
