Marshall County Solid Waste District Director Requests Additional Appropriation for Baler Repair

Marshall County Solid Waste District Director Marianne Peters presented the Marshall County Council members with an additional appropriation request Monday morning for repairs to the horizontal baler.

She said it’s the largest piece of equipment at the Recycle Depot and it is 14 years old.

“We provide cardboard recycling for residents of Marshall County for free, as well as businesses that want to take advantage,” said Peters.  “We bale all this cardboard and it goes up to a recycler up in Elkhart. All that revenue comes back into our programs.”

The additional appropriation request was for $6,933 for bi-annual maintenance and additional repairs to keep the machine in service.

“Last year we baled 173 tons of cardboard. It stays pretty busy.”

The council unanimously approved the request.

In other additional appropriation requests, the council approved $100,000 for the Sheriff’s Department for vehicle maintenance supplies as fuel, oil and other supply prices have doubled.  This amount would get the department through the rest of the year with these costs.  The coroner asked for a $1,400 additional appropriation to cover fuel costs and an increase in call volume through the rest of the year.  The surveyor asked for $1,500 for vehicle repairs.  The building commissioner asked for $3,000 to cover fuel costs through the end of the year.   An additional appropriation in the amount of $17,297 was requested so grant funds awarded by the Marshall County Community Foundation can be spent by the Marshall County Park Board.

All requests were approved.
