Marshall County Commission President Kevin Overmyer updated the press Friday on the current healthcare situation in Plymouth and in Marshall County.
St. Joseph Regional Medical Center and Trinity Health recently made some changes to operations at the Plymouth site in order to face financial hardships in the past couple of years, as well as the response to the evaluation of needs and wants within the system. The ICU and CCU units at the Plymouth hospital have been closed, and clinics in other areas in Marshall County have also announced upcoming closures.
The hospital has also ceased a partnership with Older Adult Services where the hospital will no longer support transportation services of oncology patients to the hospital for treatment.
Despite this, Overmyer said efforts are being made to hire at least six new physicians and nurse practitioners to be placed soon in Marshall County with more hiring opportunities planned beyond the immediate need.
Overmyer stressed that the Plymouth hospital will not be closing.
“It has been reiterated to me several times from several different people that the hospital is not closing,” said Overmyer. “I think that this sends a strong message to our citizens that St. Joe is committed to this county and this hospital and the wellness of our citizens.”
A meeting between health officials and county leaders is taking place later this month to discuss future plans.
