The Marshall-Starke Development Center is in need of security upgrades and the Marshall County Commissioners discussed support paying for those upgrades with American Rescue Plan Act funding.
During the last meeting, Commission President Kevin Overmyer said he was contacted by one of the facility’s board of directors about the status of security there. Overmyer toured the facility and discovered the need for more security at the Marshall-Starke Development Center.
Overmyer explained during the meeting that Marshall-Starke Development Center is a non-profit agency and does not have the funding needed for this type of upgrade. He said some of the American Rescue Plan Act funds could be used to assist with this project.
The facility is host to about 134 children who take part in educational opportunities and pre-school programs. Services are also provided to those who are developmentally challenged.
Marshall-Starke Development Center President and CEO Rick Thompson said quotes for cameras and locks and other measures were gathered. Those quotes and bids will be reviewed by the facility’s board of directors with a recommendation to be brought back before the commissioners.
The Marshall County Commissioners agreed to support the costs and will review a recommendation when it is brought forward during a public meeting.
