Law Enforcement Reminds Residents of New Gun Permit Law

A new law takes effect today where the State of Indiana will no longer require handgun permits to legally carry, conceal or transport a handgun within the state.

Law enforcement officials remind residents that the law does not allow everyone to carry a handgun as the law contains certain criteria in order for a person to legally carry in the state.

The change will allow anyone age 18 or older to carry a handgun in public except those with a felony conviction, have a conviction of domestic violence, who face a restraining order or have a dangerous mental illness.

If you are considering carrying a handgun and are not certain if you legally qualify to carry a handgun, Indiana State Police recommends applying for a state-issued handgun permit, which is free.

It may be necessary to have a license to carry if you travel to another state which requires a handgun permit to legally carry and/or transport.
