PLYMOUTH — The Plymouth Common Council approved support of Plymouth Fire Department (PFD) Chief Steve Holm’s request to purchase a 2024 Pierce Velocity pumper (fire engine).

A $59,000 price increase was averted by swift action by Chief Holm and the Council to confirm the purchase with Representative for Macqueen Emergency and Pierce Fire Apparatus Dave Polkow who attended the meeting virtually to answer any questions.

The Plymouth Fire Department operates four ambulances, two fire engines, and an aerial.

The vehicle will cost $784,400 but Chief Holm requested support for up to $800,000 to accommodate some additional loose equipment that might increase the end total slightly. Had the council delayed support, the cost would have increased to $843,230 on May 1. Holm confirmed in a follow-up interview, “Our price will be locked in when ordering even though payment won’t be due for two years. Pierce will absorb any increase cost from their suppliers and not pass those increases on to us.”

Plymouth Councilman Robert Listenberger recommended that the council and the PFD establish a long term vehicle purchase plan for all the vehicles which includes resale or trade-in options when applicable.
