John Glenn School Board Approves Maintenance to Varsity, Auxiliary Gymnasiums

The John Glenn School Board members took action this week to approve maintenance measures to the varsity and auxiliary gymnasiums at the John Glenn High School.

Superintendent Christopher Winchell said the auxiliary gym has never been resurfaced, meaning it has not been sanded, rescreened and recoated.  The gym was installed in 2005.   While it has been maintained by the maintenance staff with cleaning and waxing since its opening, this type of preventative maintenance has not been done.  Winchell noted that resurfacing should be done every 7-10 years.

The quote from Floor Care Concepts of $29,323.54 for resurfacing includes the work on the varsity gym.  The work should be done in July.  The board unanimously approved the quote.

Meanwhile, the basketball backboards and the structure in the John Glenn High School varsity gym will be replaced.  Winchell said one of the hoops could not be lifted as a wench failed and there are other issues due to the age of the backboard structure in the gym.

“What this quote really represents is going into the varsity gym taking out all of the framing of the basketball hoops and then putting fresh steel framing in that will be up to code and be up to the industry standard,” commented Winchell.

This work would be done before the floor is resurfaced.

The quote from Lee Company of $47,510 for new backboards and structure replacement was approved with a unanimous vote.
