With several inches of snow expected to fall in the area this week, the American Heart Association encourages Hoosiers to protect hearts while shoveling snow.
The American Heart Association recommends that frequent breaks be taken while shoveling and do not eat a heavy meal prior to the activity. Use a small shovel and push snow when possible. Officials say it is safer to lift smaller amounts of snow more times than to lift huge amounts of snow.
Being outside in a colder environment and doing a physical activity like shoveling snow can lead to symptoms of a heart attack. Chest discomfort is a warning sign, along with discomfort in other areas of the upper body, shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort, nausea/vomiting, and back or jaw pain.
