Plymouth Police Department (PPD) Chief David Bacon requested approval from the Plymouth Board of Public Works to apply for a grant through the Indiana Department of Homeland Security for body-worn cameras.

The department will be moving forward with the purchase of body-cameras with money budgeted from last year. A purchase order has already been completed.

“This would be recouping some of our money if we’re awarded the grant.” Chief Bacon also requested that the board approve that he start the quote process for the two squad cars that have already been approved in the 2022 budget.

Member Jeff Houin asked if the option of adding an electric or hybrid vehicle to the fleet had been explored. Chief Bacon reported that Bremen Police Department had issues with their vehicle that would have proven costly had it not still been under warranty. He said that an additional challenge for electric / hybrid vehicles is that some of the repair and maintenance work requires specialized training; currently PPD uses the mechanics at the City of Plymouth Street Department.

The board approved both requests.
