The Culver Town Council members held a public hearing this week on a proposed unsafe building ordinance.
The ordinance addresses the inspection, repair or removal of unsafe buildings to protect the health, safety and environment of the public.
Any buildings or properties inspected by the building commissioner and determined to be unsafe will be declared public nuisances and shall undergo repair, rehabilitation, demolition or removal. The Culver Town Council will act as the hearing committee with Attorney Jeanette Surrisi to assist with matters.
Violations may be charged $100 per day as long as the violation exists.
Clerk-Treasurer Karen Heim said this updated ordinance tightens up the processes already in place in the town, and follows state statute.
Developer Kevin Berger sought clarification on a few items in the ordinance. There were no other public comments.
The council members unanimously approved the first reading of the ordinance Tuesday night. Additional readings of the ordinance will be held during their next meeting Tuesday, January 25.
