Jefferson Street Temporary Crossing Update Given to Plymouth City Council

The Plymouth Complete Streets committee members recently completed a temporary crosswalk project on Jefferson Street in front of the Coffee Lodge in October.

Committee member Adam Thada explained the objective of the project to the Plymouth City Council last week.

“The goals really were to increase the safety at the crossing there and the design to reach that goal was to decrease the crossing time that people have to take to get across by narrowing it, increase the visibility to motorists, and calming the traffic in the area where speeding is pretty common there,” stated Thada.

He stated that MACOG conducted a survey surrounding the project.  Out of the 43 responses given, Thada said the answers were split as to if people accepted the crosswalk.

Thada continued, “We had about 60 to 75 percent affirmative on these and they were questions like if they felt the traffic was safer for pedestrians, if speeding was reduced, that they were willing to support traffic calming measures in the future, and that they learned something from it.”

Thada said the design did slow down the traffic and comments were made that it was safer for children and older adults to cross the street in that area of East Jefferson Street.

He said the committee members will review the survey and other feedback so they can make plans for future projects.
