The Marshall County Commissioners took action last week to eliminate the West City of Plymouth precinct.
Clerk Deb VanDeMark explained that she previously sent paperwork to the Election Division concerning the Marshall County Election Board’s recommendation and the Marshall County Commissioners approval of the elimination of the precinct, but it was met with feedback.
VanDeMark commented, “I received an email back that said, ‘…based on the map of Council Districts included with your submission this revision would split the 2012 County Council lines. You should be award that County Commissioner and Council lines are not permitted to split precincts so you should take that into consideration as you redraw those districts this year.”
The elimination of the West City of Plymouth precinct would add the property into the West 1 precinct and would add it to Commissioner District 3 and County Council District 2. However, there are no voters in that precinct. If a voter would move into the lone residence in that area, the voter would register in the West City of Plymouth and vote with a split ballot.
The commissioners voted to eliminate West City of Plymouth and put it into the West 1 precinct. A redistricting resolution or ordinance would be considered and approved by the commissioners by the end of the year.
