Indiana State Police Investigating Pursuit, Officer-Involved Shooting in Culver

Troopers from the Indiana State Police are investigating a Sunday afternoon incident that reportedly began as a pursuit and ended as an officer-involved shooting in Culver.

Indiana State Police say an officer with the Culver Police Department attempted to stop the driver of a white Chevrolet passenger car just after 2 p.m. ET who was suspected to be driving while intoxicated on State Road 17 west of Culver.  The driver did not stop and led officers on a pursuit through Marshall County, according to the report.

The driver reportedly came to stop at a business in the 1100 block of North Lake Shore Drive in Culver.  Police say a Marshall County deputy stopped his vehicle in front of the Chevrolet.  The deputy exited his vehicle and then the driver allegedly drove forward, pinning the deputy between the Chevrolet and the police vehicle.  The deputy reportedly fired several rounds from his department-issued handgun which struck the driver.  Police say the driver then drove several hundred feet and crashed into an unoccupied vehicle in a nearby parking lot.

Officers rendered aid to the driver until Culver EMS arrived at the scene.  The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the report.

The identities of the driver and officer will be released at a later time.  The deputy was treated and released from the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Plymouth.

All information will be forwarded to the Marshall County Prosecutor’s Office for further review.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
