The Culver Town Council members approved a proclamation Tuesday night that recognizes October 3-9 as National Fire Prevention Week.
This year’s theme is “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety” with the sounds of smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, or other warning devices.
Culver-Union Township Fire Chief Terry Wakefield said firefighters will be going to the local schools this week to go over fire safety and fire drills with students.
National Fire Prevention Week is a time for residents to check batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors, or buy them if there are no such devices in a home.
It is also a time for families to prepare a fire escape plan.
With leaves starting to fall from trees, residents are urged to burn leaves in a responsible manner where it is legal to do so. Firefighters recommend burning leaves on a non-windy day and make sure there is a water source ready in case the fire gets out of hand. Blow out candles before going to sleep or leaving the house, clean lint traps in your dryer regularly, clean wood burning stoves, and clear creosote buildup from chimneys.
