An engineer from Midwestern Engineers submitted an analysis to Culver town officials responding to complaints of drainage problems in several downtown building basements along South Main Street from north of East Jefferson Street to south of East Madison Street, which needs the help of drainage system installation.
Culver Town Manager Ginny Bess Munroe presented the letter from Engineer Mark Sullivan who looked at the town’s infrastructure to determine if that was the source of the issue. Sullivan noted in the report that the buildings range in age from 50 to 100 years old.
Munroe read aloud from the document, “It would be very common for buildings of this age to have wet basements. The source of the water could be ground water or rainfall where water enters the basements around the perimeter of the foundation walls. Observing the adjacent sidewalks they appear to be in good condition and slope away from buildings. Adjacent town streets have curb and gutters to capture surface drainage. Therefore, we do not feel the town’s infrastructure is causing the problem. We see nothing the town could do to improve the problem.”
He recommended that the owners contact businesses that may specialize in waterproofing to remedy any problems.
The Culver Town Council members unanimously voted in favor of giving a copy of that report to the affected property owners.
