The installation of electric car chargers on Jefferson Street just east of Main Street in Culver will create an amendment to the parking ordinance to include that addition, but it was not quite ready for approval by the Culver Town Council last week.
Town Manager Ginny Bess Munroe explained that the parking spots for the electric car charging stations need to be ADA compliant. She said IDEM needs a plan of how the parking spots will be ADA compliant which could affect the location of the parking spots.
“We’ve looked at numerous designs of these stations and ours is a little different in that that cars park along the curb instead of going straight into the station,” said Munroe. “We may have to order longer cords. We don’t want the front of one car and the front of the other car coming together because that would be illegal parking to a point. If we encourage it at the electric charging station, people will start doing it all over downtown Culver and we don’t want that.”
With that, Munroe suggested tabling the amendment until the ADA compliance issue is solved.
Munroe mentioned that another amendment will be presented at that time that would not allow people to park golf carts on sidewalks.
The Culver Town Council members agreed to table the ordinance where it may be presented for approval in July.
