Members of the Develop Culver organization recently completed a Preserving Main Street grant application. If awarded, the downtown group could receive $2 million to preserve a historic property on Main Street.
At a previous Culver Town Council meeting, Town Manager Ginny Bess Munroe said that the building that could be preserved is the First Farmers Bank property. Munroe explained that some preliminary architect work, cost estimates and a study have been done already in previous efforts to come up with funding to preserve the structure.
The town council members previously gave support toward this grant in that the town will act as a pass-through entity for grant funds. A match would be needed for the grant which would go toward sustaining the Main Street organization and to endow sustaining other Main Street historic preservation projects. The match would be 10 percent and would be gathered if awarded the grant.
The town council members previously voted 3-1-1 in support of the grant application. Councilman Rich West abstained from the vote as he is a board member on Develop Culver, while Councilman Bill Cleavenger opposed the vote stating that if the town council was not in complete control he could not support the application.
During this week’s meeting, Munroe said notification of grant awards should be made by the end of the month.
