Two Bremen High School students were recently selected to be student representatives on the Bremen Town Council.
Bremen High School Principal Bruce Jennings introduced Easton Reed and Selena Martinez to the council members who will serve two years in the capacity. They both may attend meetings or there may be times when one student representative attends a meeting. A representative will be present at a meeting for the next two years.
Reed is the president of the Sophomore class. Martinez is first in her class academically and is the president of the Key Club and Spanish Club.
Jennings encouraged the town council to keep them engaged.
“Both are extremely smart and both are top students and very active leaders,” commented Jennings. “They have a lot of different viewpoints about the world which is good. I like that! I really appreciate them taking the time to do this. What a growth opportunity for students. That’s what we’re all about at Bremen High School – growing student leaders.”
They are encouraged to bring issues to the council for discussion, but they will be non-voting members of the governing body. They are allowed to see certain documents that the town council members receive, some which will remain confidential. They will be excluded from executive meetings as information in those meetings remain closed to the public.
The Bremen Town Council members welcomed the students to the council. Bremen Town Councilman Michael Leman, Town Attorney Anthony Wagner and Director of Operations Trend Weldy explained various aspects of the meeting and procedures during the students’ first meeting.
