The Culver Town Council members approved additional paperwork for the third phase of the Lake Max Trail during their meeting last week.
The third phase of the trail was initially expected to go down Academy Road to State Road 10 which had the support of the board members of Culver Academies as it borders school property, but school officials have since indicated that an alternate route by the railroad property on their land would be preferred. Culver Academy officials would grant easement to the town to go the preferred route.
The town and the school met in a work session to iron out details and the alternative route was officially approved by the council during their last meeting. Council President Ginny Bess Munroe said Culver Academies agreed to share the cost of the survey work, preliminary design, engineering, and environmental work on the new route which comes to nearly $60,000. That work is not covered under an INDOT grant awarded to the town for that work. She noted they would have to approve a motion to allow Town Attorney Jim Clevenger to draft a cost sharing agreement between the town and the school which was approved with a unanimous vote.
The council members also unanimously approved a motion to authorize Clevenger to draft documents that would grant the town permission to build the trail in the easement at the school.
