Bremen School Board Approves Middle School Alternative Program

Middle School students at the Bremen Elementary/Middle School will have some added resources for assistance thanks to a decision by the Bremen Public School Board members Wednesday night.

During the school board’s March meeting, Superintendent Dr. Jim White and Bremen Elementary/Middle School Assistant Principal Reggie Fleavig presented the proposal to the school board.  They explained that a program could assist Middle School students who are not successful in the traditional classroom.  It would place students in a different structured learning day and address certain needs.

As previously reported, the proposal included the purchase of computer software that would help with content learning with Math, Science, Social Studies, and English/Language Arts that parallels Indiana education standards.

The Middle School Alternative Program would place a licensed teacher in the classroom where students can work at their own pace on core subjects and achieve remediation necessary to perhaps return to a regular classroom. They would get more close attention with assignment help.

The alternative programming could help students in those grade levels to reach mental health and social emotional goals to make them successful in their learning.  It also allows for more communication between the school and parents/guardians to discuss student progress and achievement.

In between the March and April school board meetings, board members were able to get some answers to questions concerning the number of students the program would assist and how all students could benefit from a similar program in future years.

Dr. White asked the board members for their formal approval of the Middle School Alternative Program Wednesday night and it passed with a unanimous vote.  The initial plan is to use ESSER II grant funds as part of the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act.
