The Culver Town Council members agreed Tuesday night to move forward with the third phase of the Lake Max trail through the abandoned railroad corridor.
The council members met with officials from the Culver Academies last week to discuss the route of the third phase of the trail. The third phase of the trail was initially expected to go down Academy Road to State Road 10 which had the support of the board members of Culver Academies as it borders school property, but school officials have since indicated that an alternate route by the railroad property on their land would be preferred. Culver Academy officials would grant easement to the town to go the preferred route.
The town plans to apply for additional funding with INDOT to put toward the preliminary costs. If the additional funding is not approved, the town and Culver Academies will split costs up to $60,000 for preliminary engineering, surveys and environmental reports with the new route that will go through 16C Road.
The council members unanimously approved a motion Tuesday night to have either Town Council President Ginny Bess Munroe or Vice President Bill Githens apply for the additional funds with INDOT. They also unanimously approved a motion to amend the plans to reflect the change of the trail route which is nearly one mile long.
