Marshall County Sheriff Working out Details so Staff Can Attend Officer’s Funeral

Area police agencies are stepping up to assist Marshall County Sheriff Matt Hassel in finding help so his staff members can attend the funeral service of Marshall County Sheriff’s Department Captain Daniel Butt.

Sheriff Hassel told the Marshall County Commissioners Monday that he reached out to police agencies looking for help to cover shifts and others have reached out to him to see what help could be provided.

Hassel stated, “The Starke County Sheriff [Bill Dulin] has already reached out to me and we will also reach out to Chad Larsh from the Indiana State Police to make sure we can get coverage during that time period for my officers to attend.  We’ll try to fill it with part-timers and people who aren’t going first.  If not, we will reach out to Kosciusko County on the dispatch side because they are our dispatch back-up.  I’m sure I’ll talk to Fulton County.  I know the sheriff really well down there and I’m sure he’ll bring jail staff.  We’ll make sure we reimburse them for whatever it costs them.”

Captain Daniel Butt served on the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department for 23 years.  His funeral service will be Friday, February 19 at 11 a.m. at the Plymouth Wesleyan Church.  Visitation is Thursday, February 18 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home in Plymouth.  Memorial contributions may be directed to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department or to the Marshall County Humane Society.

Sheriff Hassel commented that his death on February 12was a shock to the law enforcement community.  He was 53. .
