Marshall County Highway Superintendent Jason Peters and the Marshall County Commissioners will soon work together to finalize a document that outlines protocols when it comes to damaged mailboxes in the winter.
Peters presented information to the commissioners Monday morning for consideration. It may be discussed during their next meeting in March.
Peters explained that if the force of the snow knocks down a mailbox or damages a post, the county highway will not accept responsibility for that. If the plow strikes a mailbox, the highway department will replace it.
Complaints are investigated and a determination is made after proper examination of the details.
Peters also commented that trash containers are becoming a problem if they are placed too close to the roadway. There are cases when trash containers are accidentally clipped by snow plows and loose garbage is scattered from the impact. Residents may want to consider placing trash bins further from the road to give plow drivers more room to work.
